The CEO chairs the Board of Directors, which is made up of the division directors. Division directors make sure that the policies laid down by the Board of Trustees are implemented, and they also support the work of other staff and volunteers.
Dr Mohamed Ashmawey
Chief Executive Officer
Dr. Mohamed Ashmawey joined Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) as CEO in early 2012 and leads the Islamic Relief family in over 40 countries around the world. Whilst addressing ongoing crises he is transforming Islamic Relief into an impact-led and rights-based development INGO that helps people lift themselves out of poverty. His many years of corporate management expertise in process re-engineering and organisational restructuring is helping to change the way that IRW works across the world. Dr Ashmawey was formerly CEO of Islamic Relief USA and has held senior roles in the corporate sector including as a Vice-Chairman and Country-Head for Electronic Data Systems where his clients included ABN Amro and General Motors. He has served on the boards of bodies including the Islamic Society of North America, and he received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland in 1988 where he continued as a visiting professor. Dr Ashmawey is married with four children.
Director of Islamic Relief UK
Jehangir Malik graduated with a Law Degree in 1992. He first worked with IRW in 1991 as a volunteer-steward at the Islamic Relief Games and was later appointed to various roles including Development Director of IR USA and Deputy Country Director in Afghanistan. Jehangir engages with government departments by providing policy briefings & strategic engagement on international development and foreign policy issues while also often visiting field missions and disaster zones for fundraising and media purposes. He remains active at the UK community level through encouragement of civic engagement, initiatives for youth development and a passion for Muslim engagement on mainstream issues. In 2010, Jehangir was awarded an OBE in recognition of his 20 years of contribution to the humanitarian cause.
Mehdi Ben Mrad
Director of International Programmes
After 10 years in the IT and consulting industry, Mehdi joined Islamic Relief Worldwide in 2007. His early career with us focussed on nurturing relationships with the UN and international agencies based in Geneva. He went on to serve in a variety of challenging posts, including interim Head of Africa and Head of Institutional Funding. Mehdi is now responsible for delivering worldwide programmes and disaster response – leading our programming offices around the world and our international team based in the UK. He has an MBA in International Management from University of Stuttgart & SIMT Business School, and a BSc in Computer Science.
Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development
Shakil’s involvement with IRW dates from the early 1990s as a volunteer in various roles. He went on to become Head of Accounts for over ten years before taking on his present director post. As part of the senior management team, Shakil has contributed to developing IRW’s five-year strategy and managing change. He has been involved in a number of community initiatives such as establishing a local radio station, developing youth activities and is a mentor working with disaffected youngsters. Shakil is a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and is currently studying for a Masters in Human Resource Management. He is a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and holds a diploma in Charity Accounting from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales.
